KEEPING P.A.C.E. | DECEMBER 2019
THE PACE OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
This month’s learning experience was a celebration of science!
Grades 4 and 5 students immersed themselves in a 2-day Science Odyssey enrichment opportunity where their finished products were judged by high school students and faculty. Our grade 4s explored the human body by creating either a working model of the circulatory or digestive systems or creating a life sized representation of the human body and its parts.
Grade 5s dove into the scientific method. They chose a topic of interest from Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or Computer Science. Within their chosen discipline, they either designed and implemented an experiment or created a working model in order to gain insights into the life of a scientist. They truly became young experts in the field!
Grade 7 students created their own experimental procedure to identify unknown substances. Given a variety of scientific equipment, they applied their problem solving skills and the scientific method in order to accomplish this task.
Grade 8 students followed the scientific method and observed the properties of acids and bases in an exciting chemistry lab, including how they react to a variety of indicators.
THE PACE OF HIGHER LEVEL THINKING AND PERSONAL GROWTH
Students expanded their higher level thinking this month with Robotics VEX IQ. Some of our grade 5 and 6 students were tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Students learned to work cooperatively with each other and with teams from other schools in the spirit of friendly, but high-level competition.
Grades 9 to 12 participated in the Canadian National Mathematics League contests. These contests gave students an enriched educational opportunity to participate in an academically-oriented activity, while also gaining recognition for mathematical achievement.
THE PACE OF ARTS
Grades 1 to 4 took their learning experiences to Casa Loma. They participated in Casa Loma’s holiday event with a teacher-guided tour of the castle, exploring its unique architecture along with the festive garden decorations. Students visited Santa’s reindeer, a bouncy castle, an arts and crafts centre and a magician. They wrapped up this exciting field trip with a nutcracker skating show.
Students and faculty concluded the 2019 school year with our Winter Music Festival. They enjoyed the instrumental and vocal sounds of holiday favorites and melodious concert pieces performed by the P.A.C.E. Concert Band (conducted by Mr. de Lara) and the P.A.C.E. Choir (conducted by Ms. Fuller).
THE PACE OF ATHLETICS
This month our grades 1-2 hit the gym with an omega versus delta intramural game.
