THE PACE OF THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Grade 1 students investigated the physical characteristics and needs of living things at Round the Bend Farm. They learned about unique food sources for animals, attributes of plants and the importance of bees.

Grade 3 students participated in a hands-on private reptile presentation and tour of the zoo at Reptilia to complement their study of phylogenic trees. They also explored the physical characteristics of reptiles and how they adapt to their surroundings.

Grade 7 students stepped into the day-to-day lives of the Hurons and Jesuits at St. Marie Among the Hurons. As part of their study of New France, students enjoyed hands-on workshops that exposed them to various cultural perspectives and gave them insight into the connection between the past and present day.

To enhance their Ecology unit, Grade 8 students participated in our locally designed Stream Study at Willowgrove Outdoor Education Centre. They collected and analyzed physical and biological data to assess the health of the local stream.

THE PACE OF HIGHER LEVEL THINKING AND PERSONAL GROWTH

Grade 5 students had a 3-day expedition in Albion Hills Conservation Park. Here they had the opportunity to work collectively in treasure mapping, biomimicry design and biowild geocaching. Grade 6 students adventured off to Black Creekย  where their theme unit on Victorian Era was brought to life. Students participated in a village tour to learn how settlers of the time lived, including experiencing a typical school house. They also gained a greater understanding of how the industrial revolution led to large scale immigration to North America in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Grade 8 and 9 students embarked on a leadership, team building field study to Olympia Outdoor and Challenge Education Centre in Huntsville. Students took part in activities that engaged them physically, intellectually and emotionally. These activities focused on fostering mutual respect, trust, communication, goal setting, physical agility, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and personal responsibility.

THE PACE OF THE ARTS

Grade 2 students explored their theme unit โ€œForests of Today and Tomorrowโ€. They collected leaves and learned about the structure and function of various parts of a tree at Kortwright Centre. Upon returning to the classroom, they participated in a follow-up art activity using their leaf collection.

Grade 12 students immersed themselves in the cultural experience of Ancient Greece during their visit to the Royal Ontario Museum and University of Toronto. They observed and analyzed relics of the past and even feasted on many of Greeceโ€™s traditional dishes in Greektown.
